ALBUM REVIEW - THE PROPER ORNAMENTS - 6 LENINS

The Proper Ornaments - 6 Lenins - Tapete Records - April 5th 2019

Three albums in and The Proper Ornaments appear to be turning into a steady fixture in the world of laid-back part-psychedelia/part-jangle pop.

Ultimate Painting's James Hoare heads the (kind-of) supergroup from all corners of melodic soft-alt pop - members of Wesley Gonazalez, TOY and Charles Howl merge to make a pleasing if unchallenging woozy summer rock album.

Written and recorded during and after bouts of illness and two years after various emotional torments and their second album, 6 Lenins musically recalls Felt, Go-Betweens, The Apartments, The Wake and Richard Hawley, particularly on the beautifully monikered Crepuscular Child and the hazy Where Are You Now. Lyrically somewhat more simplistic, The Proper Ornaments inadvertently resemble many acts found on Marina or El Records some two or three decades ago. Which is no bad thing.
