Part of an ongoing Reggae Legends series on Trojan Records, the forthright title describes exactly what you're going to get - 40 pin-sharp bangers from the Trojan vaults showcasing one of dub's masters. Ok, THE Dub Master. And I'm including Lee Perry. From electrical engineer to one of Jamaica's most important figureheads culturally as well as musically, King Tubby is revered beyond just being a reggae producer and this mid-priced Best Of demonstrates why.

Featuring forty familiar and not-so-obvious dubs from the length and breadth of roots and lover's reggae, Best of King Tubby focuses on the technical genius of mixing desks, echo chambers and delay pedals. Dennis Brown, Augustus Pablo, Rupie Edwards, Horace Andy, Max Romeo and Johnny Clarke are among the versioned crowd on here with Edwards' superb Buckshot Dub heading up proceedings and Big Joe's Tubby at the Controls providing the second bookend to what is a pretty inclusive collection.

The Dynamites' Kingston Town, The Techniques All-stars' Stalag 17 and Pablo's More Warning rank as some of Tubby's most recognisable works, while I Trim the Barber (Jackie Edwards and the Aggrovators) makes use of John Holt's familiar Ali Baba hit. Soundsystem heads will be nodding to Roots of Dub and The Upsetter's sonically leftfield Drum Rock and smokers will seek solace in grooves provided for Pablo and The Crystalites. Timeless.
