One part Cluster, one part ambient romantic and one part Wobbly (yes, Wobbly), Snowghost Pieces' creators are all leading lights in the world of atmospheric electronica. Dieter Moebius has the largest catalogue to speak of - founder of the aforementioned K(C)luster, collaborator with Brian Eno, Asmus Tietchens (his last release was their self-titled 2012 album) and the late Conny Plank - while Tim Story delivered some charming esoteria on the Uniton label back in the '80s and fellow American Jon Leidecker has issued a swathe of challenging electronic soundscapes as Wobbly (or himself) and with Matmos and a member of Negativland.
With all of these attributes tossed into the pot, you'd be right for expecting a broad spectrum delivered in instrumental widescreen - all three musicians make a stamp on all of the pieces with none any prettier or atonal than the next. Of particular note are the opening quartet - Fracture Fuss does what it says in the title, a jittery foreboding soundtrack for the end of days, while Cut Bank resembles something David Sylvian might ooze out of a shamanic commune high in the hills. Cliff Doze is, well, reminiscent of a sleepy afternoon over the white cliffs of Dover - fuzzy transient rhythms and bobbing dragonfly synth melodies soothe and control. And if Beelzebub had a nice line in musical boxes or created a ringtone, he'd probably pick Pinozeek.
Hardly created for popping on while painting a bathroom (I tried, I failed), Snowghost Pieces is perhaps best suited to airing in silence, in solitude and indoors with the lights out.
