Commendable and not-precious Australian trio Trichotomy have already
perked up bystander's ears with debut-album Variations and its sophomore
follow-up The Gentle War.
For their third set, the threesome continue to mine
similar seams as before without advancing into new territories, although you
can't deny the subtle but playful melody on the opening Strom - it's a good start.
Things get grander on the John Abercrombie-esque The Blank Canvas, the first of three pieces
to feature guest guitarist James Muller. His warm unflustered style enhances
Trichotomy's robust arrangements without blanding them out and on the more
plaintive Part 2 of the same track, helps bring the track to a triumphant conclusion.
Metheny lovers might well dig this man's pluckability.
The band's own family
inspires a couple of tracks - Lullaby is a gently-brushed ode to John Parker's son while pianist Sean Foran
pays homage to his daughter with the positive and busy Song For EV. The remainder of the album isn't quite so
remarkable, ultimately making Fact Finding Mission a lottery draw, rather than
a big win - 'tis OK.
