ALBUM REVIEWS - Triptides - Sun Pavilion - CD

Indiana surf-rockers soak up the sun, crank up the fuzzy pop and go all Creation on us

360 Degrees - Out 19th November

8/10

Fans of Fortuna Pop and Creation alert! You are going to love this new album by Bloomington's Triptides. They've only been formed since the latter end of 2010 but it sounds like these young bucks have been drinking in the joys of Camera Obscura, Biff Bang Pow, Weather Prophets, The Sneetches, Lawndale, Jasmine Minks, The Tambourines and any band that has ever jangled with a nod to the '60s and a cardigan in the wardrobe - and there's 'owt wrong with that!

Sun Pavilion is a woozy selection of a dozen dazzling dazed little trinkets that veer from sun-kissed beach-bum pop nuggets like the glorious opener "Bright Sky", the thoughtful "Graveyard" and the two-speed stoner "Sun/Shine", right up to surf-rockin' boppers such as "Overboard" and "Shark Attack!" or laid-back doper's elegies, "Silhouette", "Voices" and "Undone". A wide range of styles doesn't always make a cohesive album and it would be all too easy to also mention the Velvet Underground and The Byrds in summing up a few obvious influences, but I just have - trust me, it's no bad thing.

Considering that this is their debut album, Triptides sound like they've been around for ten years not two, such is the strength of the songwriting and even the running-order, often a bug-bear and a trip-hazard for many newbies. They've nailed pretty much everything on this inaugural album and deserve to be coveted by all who hear them. With an authentic production which makes the album sound like it was recorded in a tin-can, the detail is indeed with these dusty young devils. Kick back with a cool beer, imagine (you'll have to when you look outside) that the sun is shining and that the job you should be doing can wait 'til the music's over. If only it was on vinyl.
