ALBUM REVIEW - Microdisney - The Clock Comes Down The Stairs

Microdisney: The Clock Comes Down The Stairs: Cherry Red: Out Now: 10/10 It isn't often I become so immersed in an album that I become a clinging emotional fool, but Microdisney's under-stated and under-rated 1985 masterpiece is one of them. My first original copy, on cassette (for the extra tracks), has worn thin only to be replaced with a serviceable vinyl copy that I still own, as well as being backed up by the band's recent-ish double CD compilation Daunt Square to Elsewhere (already deleted, it seems) which contained many of the songs here. This long overdue reissue of one of Rough Trade's defining mid-'80s albums only serves to strengthen the argument that Microdisney's creative catalysts Cathal Coughlan and Sean O'Hagan were at the top of their game and remain two of Ireland's key songwriters. ALBUM REVIEW - Ian McCulloch - Candleland 2xCD - Rhino/Edsel

Bunnymen polymath's solo albums come under scrutiny with extra tracks and rarities 8/10 One of the '80s icons and permanent fixtures on many a student's bedroom wall, Ian McCulloch spawned at least a few thousand fashion clones dressed in trademark overcoat, skinny black jeans and sporting a sprouty mop-top. Yet for all these stylistic faux-pas back in the day, McCulloch was, and still is, one of Britain's most engaging songwriters who, with Bunny bandmates, racked up an enviable stream of the decade's true anthems - The Killing Moon arguably remains a creative holy grail. After Echo and the Bunnymen split for the first time in 1987, McCulloch seemed to know exactly where he was going with his solo career, somewhere personal and somewhere without the pressures of album, singles, tour and next album. There are no clear winners in this year's Flipside Album Of The Year round-up - instead, 2014 threw up a fair few contenders but nothing as outstanding as Boards Of Canada and David Bowie (last year's chart-toppers).
